Based upon the theories of industrial economy, service innovation, strategic management, regional innovation system, etc., the institute for service innovation aims at building a multi-level (e.g. firm level, sectoral level, regional level, national level and global level) research framework of service innovation so as to help firms and governments to make policies for future development. More specially, the institute emphasizes the innovation and strategy theories of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS), including innovation behaviors, innovation system, modern industrial system and service development, combination between modern service sector and manufacturing sector, and sustainable development strategy of service firms.

This institute makes use of the latest information technology (IT) to help enterprises establish and improve their strategies regarding knowledge and intellectual property management and standards setting, promote sustainable innovation, and enhance their innovation capability. It also studies the impact of IT on national knowledge, intellectual property and standard strategy as well as the role of IT in establishment of a highly ordered knowledge network, an efficient intellectual property evaluation mechanism and a standard setting system.

This institute focuses on the academic research of technology entrepreneurship as well as entrepreneurial talent training based on the localized entrepreneurship practice. This institute has collaborative relations with STVP, SPRIE, US-ATMC of Stanford University, as well as Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. NIIM joined the MIT Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program(REAP) as partnership in China since 2011,and launched the joint Venture lab @Silicon Valley with Ufrate Incubator in 2014, by which to accelerate entrepreneurship research and education of Zhejiang University with the leading partners.
