On September 4 and 5, jointly sponsored by and , 7th International Symposium on Global Manufacturing and (GMC’11) is successfully held in . The symposium lasts for 2 days, and it focuses on transfer and upgrade of Chinese manufacturing industry as well as innovation in global manufacturing network in financial crisis. There are more than 200 teachers, students, officials, and chiefs of enterprises, including , , , , of , , , of Sciences, , Geely, Rockwell, Toshiba etc.
Prof. Simon Collinson from of , Prof. Michael Radnor from Northwestern University, Prof. Wu Xiaobo (Director of NIIM and Executive Dean of School of Management) and Prof. Chen Jin (Associate Director of NIIM and Executive Dean of Undergraduate School of Zhejiang University) gives wonderful keynote speech. Prof. Simon Collinson analyzes the situation of ODI of Chinese enterprises. Prof. Michael Radnor gives a speech on strategic and technological challenge of next generation of manufacturing. Prof. Wu Xiaobo gives a speech on ODI and industrial transformation and upgrading by taking examples of Ningbo Yuren, Hikvion and Fulida. He holds that both earlier stage and acquisition integration phase of ODI are important.
With subject of “Chinese Manufacturing in new ear: transformation and upgrading strategy of ODI”, the conference sets several topics on “transformation and upgrading of ODI”, “ODI investment strategy”, “theory and practice of global production network”, “knowledge management of global production network”, “network and capability building intercompany”, “open innovation and global R&D” and “inclusiveness development and inclusiveness innovation”. There also have three special sessions on “dynamic cooperation network management”, “innovation, transformation and upgrading of Chinese Manufacturing” and “ODI impact”.
In “dynamic cooperation network management” session, Prof. Ilan Alon from proposes 3 elements affected globalization of Chinese enterprises, that’s, human and social capital, tendency of business and entrepreneurship. Mike Ma from Geely discusses Geely’s R&D globalization, and tells the founding of a new joint venture company with LTI as well as the courses in purchasing VOLVO and DSI. Prof. Yasuo Ikawa gives a speech on “Globalization manufacturing and ” and says that there are still many problems in globalization, such as energy, food, water, environment, stability of financial market and so on. Prof. Vincent Yip points out the development of in the future by analyzing development patterns in .
In “innovation, transformation and upgrading of Chinese Manufacturing” session, Prof. Shi Yongjiang from Cambridge University uses framework (contexts, construction, configuration, capability, co-operation, change) to prospect continuous research plan. Prof. Gao Xudong from introduces the situation of wind energy and solar energy in recent years of Chief, and the influence of technical performance, governmental support, value chain conformity ability and leading enterprise strategy. Prof. Geon-Cheol Shin from compares situations of knowledge transfer and strategic performance of R&D centers between and .
In “ODI impact” session, Prof. Zhou Jianghua from of Sciences explains total innovation and part of the innovation in multi-dimension. Prof. Li Chunli from describes development of emerging industry by “3rd Industrial Revolution”. Mr. Hamsa Thota from introduces Obama administration’s strategy to restore manufacture in the global leadership and concludes the important role of American education system in national innovation system.
This conference has been held successfully in and it will mend ZJU’s pace in becoming world first class university.
